October Series: Horses That Rush, Bolt, and Buck - a Modern Viewpoint

Tack, Pain, Straightness, and Balance Podcast

In this podcast, Kali shares stories about how starting colts bareback led her to question traditional tack. Kali describes her experiences testing saddles of various tree widths and designs, from a Cashel Soft Saddle, to a Wintec with Cair Panels, as well as expensive and inexpensive jumping, eventing, and treeless saddles. Kali explains how questioning traditional tack impacted her training program, leading to a greater emphasis on straightness and balance, which greatly reduced the need for commonplace bombproofing and desensitizing exercises. Kali also briefly touches on organic cues, meaning cues that naturally affect the horse, versus constructed cues, which are developed through training.

This podcast starts off a little slow. There are some wonderful stories starting about 15 minutes in. Discussion of girths and headstalls begins about 20 minutes in. Discussion of cues begins about 35 minutes in. Total run time: 64 minutes. Posted October 10th, 2009.
